Information on pepper cultivationLike other spice crops, pepper crop needs shade.
Pepper can be grown by planting two vines on each tree in coconut and betel nut orchards.
For this, first 30 cm from the base tree.
At a distance of 45 - 45 - 45 cm.
Dig pits to the east and north and fill them with a mixture of good soil, two to three bags of compost or manure and one kg of super phosphate or bone meal, as well as 50 g of recommended pesticide powder.
Two vines should be planted near each tree, one on the east and one on the north side.
When intercropping is to be done in betel nut, the distance between two betel nut trees should be 2.7 to 3.3 m; However, in densely planted betel trees, intercropping of pepper cannot be done on all the trees.
If betel is planted tightly, too much shade adversely affects pepper production.
In this case, pepper vines should be planted on only two rows of betel trees on all four sides of the garden.
Pepper seedlings with medium roots should be planted in the prepared pits during planting.
The vines should be supported to climb the vine support tree. From time to time they need to be supported, twisted and tied with a rope to climb the tree, until the small pepper vine climbs to the base tree.
Vines should not grow more than four to five meters.
The branches of the base can be cut to some extent and the shade should be kept in the right proportion.
Twice a year, in August-September and November-December, the land around the valley should be dug up.
The vines should be watered every four to six days in winter and summer, just like soil manure.
From 3 years onwards, 20 kg of manure or compost, 300 g of urea, 250 g of muriate of potash and 1 kg of super phosphate should be applied in two equal installments.
The first installment should be paid in the first week of September and the second in January.
This fertilizer is applied 30 cm from the vine.
Dig ditches at a distance and put them in it.
Apply fertilizers as required after eight years of high yield of pepper.Improved breedsNew varieties Panniyur-1 to Panniyur-5 have been developed and propagated for cultivation, and Shubhkara, Srikara, Panchami and Pournima varieties have been developed and propagated from National Spice Crop Research Center, Calicut.
The Panniyur Research Center has brought the Panniyur-1 hybridized variety from Konkan Agricultural University and tested it in the geographical conditions of Konkan and propagated it to Konkan.
An average of seven kg of green chillies is produced from one full grown vine of this variety.
The Panniyur-1 variety yields almost three times more than the village pepper.
